Yes, the Slytherins had the serpent as their mascot. The villain had the ability to converse with snakes as well as a pet snake called Nagini. This could be interpreted as a throwback to the Christian "evil and snake" idea and Nagini actually refers to female serpents of special powers in Indian mythology.
